Research on Hypnosis and Alcohol Recovery

Research on Hypnosis and Alcohol Recovery Exists

But it is Rejected by Some because it is Difficult to Measure Here is Why:

Although there are studies out there, some going back to the 1960s, scientists and researchers are hesitant about saying, YES hypnosis works __% of the time for alcohol recovery.

What I find interesting is that there are positive studies being published on how Mindfulness and Meditation are effective in the treatment of addiction.  Hypnosis is very similar.  I feel there is a misconception about what hypnosis really is.  I recently told a prospective client that it isn’t being “put under a spell” as he thought, but that it is “access to your own Self Care.”

“Hypnosis is communication, people quit after an emotional event or by merely hearing from someone that connects with them on a level that creates a shift in behavior.”

And there are certainly many people you could find that would report quitting drugs or alcohol abuse after some kind of catalyst event, like almost dying, or having the person’s child confront him / her, or becoming inspired by someone else. Most lay people don’t consider this to be related to hypnosis.  But the fact remains that plenty of people have given up bad habits after communication with someone else. That’s hypnosis.

Here is one study supporting hypnosis:

Raised Self-esteem & Serenity. Lowered Anger
In a research study on self-hypnosis for relapse prevention training with chronic drug/alcohol users. Participants were 261 veterans admitted to Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs (SARRTPs). Individuals who used repeated self-hypnosis “at least 3 to 5 times a week,” at 7-week follow-up, reported the highest levels of self-esteem and serenity, and the least anger/impulsivity, in comparison to the minimal-practice and control groups.
