The Connection Between Suicide and Alcohol Abuse.

life balance and alcoholism

Based on a study by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism suicidal behavior is about three times higher among individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) compared to those without AUD.

The study also followed the links between AUD and suicide rates in Russia and discovered lower rates of suicide where alcohol availability was limited.

Although rates of suicide and prevalence of AUD remain higher in men, they have increased more among women in recent decades. Based on postmortem blood alcohol concentrations, AUA was commonly present among those who died by suicide.

Check in with your family and friends.

Are they drinking too much too often?
Do they seem to be isolating more?
Are they ‘just not themselves’?

You would not be interfering or offending them by asking if they need help.  It is hard to ask for help and I feel most of these individuals who end up getting drunk to get brave enough to end their lives really want another way out.

If you know someone that wants help, please ask them to call me at 972-974-2094 for a consultation or to call the suicide prevention line at 1-800-273-8255 or your local alcohol treatment center.
